In both developing and developed countries, the ageing population has long been a permanent problem. Accordingly, there is a heated debate on whether having an aged population is a favorable trend. As for me, I do believe that in the long run, the negative effects will be far more than the positive ones.

Although few of the pensioners will continue to yield direct profits for the society, the government has to earmark a sum of public funds for the pension plan. As a consequence, the increase of an aged population is accompanied with more pressures on the government’s fiscal budget, reducing the spending on other social programs, like unemployment benefits and student loans.

给年轻人带来额外经济压力

Retired people also put an economic burden on the next generation. As social competition is becoming intense, how the younger generation can survive independently is again in the air. They have a hard time bringing up their own children, because the item prices constantly rise, let alone supporting their elderly parents.

社会劳动力资源短缺

A higher proportion of elderly people is bound to result in labor shortages, and even lowering productivity. Some of those who have retired from work were once highly-skilled workers; but now, the enterprises have to devote time and energy to teach and train new employers, which can be a long-term process.

On the other hand, some people think otherwise. They harbor the notion that the more elderly people there are, the more prosperous the seniors-related industries will be. For instance, an ageing population facilitates the development of healthcare and pharmacy. However, compared with the drawbacks caused by an ageing population, the minor benefits seem insignificant.

总结

Overall, the soaring number of elderly people will give rise to many social problems. For one thing, governments must work out some reasonable rules and regulations which can better the allocation of its limited revenue. For another, enterprises should make constructive efforts to help the new employers get into the swing of things in the work field.
