Do and Make are two verbs which frequently confuse students. Here we will learn about the difference between Do and Make and when to use each one.

When do you use DO?
什么时候用DO?
1. DO is used when talking about work, jobs or tasks. Note, they do not produce any physical object.
1. 谈论work, jobs or tasks的时候用。注意：这几个词后面不接任何宾语。
• Have you done your homework?
你的作业做完了吗?
• I have guests visiting tonight so I should start doing the housework now.
我现在就开始做家务，今晚你要见客人。
• I wouldn't like to do that job.
我不喜欢做那项工作。
2. DO is used when we refer to activities in general without being specific. In these cases, we normally use words like thing, something, nothing, anything, everything etc.
2. 当我们笼统的提到一项活动时用DO。这种情况下，我们通常使用thing, something, nothing, anything, everything之类的词。
• Hurry up! I've got things to do!
快点!我还有事情要做!
• Don't just stand there – do something!
不要光站在那，做点什么!
• Is there anything I can do to help you?
我可以帮你做什么吗?
3. We sometimes use DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This is more common in informal spoken English:
3. 当意思很清楚或是很模糊时，会用DO替换句中的动词。这在非正式的口语中更常见：
• Do I need to do my hair? (do = brush or comb)
• 我需要梳一下头发吗?
• Have you done the dishes yet? (done = washed)
• 这些盘子刷好了吗?
• I'll do the kitchen if you do the lawns (do = clean, do = mow)
• 如果你去割草，我就打扫厨房。
Remember Do can also be as an auxiliary verb (for making questions in the present tense - Do you like chocolate?)

When do you use MAKE?
什么时候用MAKE?
1：Make is for producing, constructing, creating or building something new.
Make的意思是*、建造、创造一些新的东西。
1：It is also used to indicate the origin of a product or the materials that are used to make something.
通常还可以表示产品的产地以及用于*商品的材料。
• His wedding ring is made of gold.
• 他的结婚戒指是金子做的。
• Wine is made from grapes.
• 葡萄酒是葡萄酿成的。
• The watches were made in Switzerland
• 这些手表产于瑞士。
2：We also use Make for producing an action or reaction:
2：我们还可以用Make表示生产的行动或是反应：
• Onions make your eyes water.
洋葱会使我们的眼睛流泪。
• You make me happy.
你让我感到快乐。
• It’s not my fault. My brother made me do it!
这不是我的错，是哥哥让我这么做的!
1：You make after certain nouns about plans and decisions:

• make the arrangements,

2：We use Make with nouns about speaking and certain sounds:

We use Make with Food, Drink and Meals:

A: You have to make a cake for Simon.
A：你要给Simon做个蛋糕。
B: I’ll do it later.
B: 我晚点做。
Notice how in the response the verb DO is used. This is because the meaning is clear and to avoid saying “I’ll make it later.” which could sound repetitive.
注意在回答中Do的用法。因为这句话的意思已经很明确了，就不用再说“I’ll make it later.”，这样会重复。
