Study Finds Web Antifraud Measure Ineffective

Published: February 5, 2007 New York Times

1. Internet security experts have long known that simple passwords do not fully defend online bank accounts from determined fraud artists. Now a study suggests that a popular secondary security measure provides little additional protection.

2.The study, produced jointly by researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, looked at a technology called site-authentication images. In the system, currently used by financial institutions like Bank of America, ING Direct and Vanguard, online banking customers are asked to select an image, like a dog or chess piece, that they will see every time they log in to their account.

3.The idea is that if customers do not see their image, they could be at a fraudulent Web site, dummied up to look like their bank’s, and should not enter their passwords.

4.The Harvard and M.I.T. researchers tested that hypothesis. In October, they brought 67 Bank of America customers in the Boston area into a controlled environment and asked them to conduct routine online banking activities, like looking up account balances. But the researchers had secretly withdrawn the images.

5.Of 60 participants who got that far into the study and whose results could be verified, 58 entered passwords anyway. Only two chose not to log on, citing security concerns.

6.“The premise is that site-authentication images increase security because customers will not enter their passwords if they do not see the correct image,” said Stuart Schechter, a computer scientist at the M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory. “From the study we learned that the premise is right less than 10 percent of the time.”

7.He added: “If a bank were to ask me if they should deploy it, I would say no, wait for something better,” he said.

8.The system has some high-power supporters in the financial services world, many trying to comply with new online banking regulations. In 2005, the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, an interagency body of federal banking regulators, determined that passwords alone did not effectively thwart intruders like identity thieves.

9.It issued new guidelines, asking financial Web sites to find better ways for banks and customers to identify each other online. January 2007 was set as the compliance date, though the council has yet to begin enforcing the mandate.

10.Banks immediately knew what they did not want to do: ask customers to download new security software, or carry around hardware devices that feed them PIN codes they can use to authenticate their identities. Both solutions would add an extra layer of security but, the banks believed, detract from the convenience of online banking.

11.The image system, introduced in 2004 by a Silicon Valley firm called PassMark Security, offered banks a pain-free addition to their security arsenals. Bank of America was among the first to adopt it, in June 2005, under the brand name SiteKey, asking its 21 million Web site users to select an image from thousands of possible choices and to choose a unique phrase they would see every time they logged in.

12.SiteKey “gives our customers a fairly easy way of authenticating the Bank of America Web site,” said Sanjay Gupta, an e-commerce executive at the bank. “It was very well received.”

13.The Harvard and M.I.T. researchers, however, found that most online banking customers did not notice when the SiteKey images were absent. When respondents logged in during the study, they saw a site maintenance message on the screen where their image and phrases should have been pictured. The error message also had a conspicuous spelling mistake, further suggesting something fishy.

14.Mr. Gupta of Bank of America said he was not troubled by the results of the survey, and stressed that SiteKey had made the bank’s Web site more secure. He also said that the system was only a single part of a larger security blanket. “It’s not like we’re betting the bank on SiteKey,” he said.

15.Most financial institutions, like Bank of America, have other ways to tell if a customer is legitimate. The banks often drop a *all software program, called a cookie, onto a user’s PC to associate the computer with the customer. If the customer logs in from another machine, he may be asked personal questions, like his mother’s maiden name.

16.Rachna Dhamija, the Harvard researcher who conducted the study, points out that swindlers can use their dummy Web sites to ask customers those personal questions. She said that the study demonstrated that site-authentication images are fundamentally flawed and, worse, might actually detract from security by giving users a false sense of confidence.

17.RSA Security, the company that bought PassMark last year, “has a lot of great data on how SiteKey instills trust and confidence and good feelings in their customers,” Ms. Dhamija said. “Ultimately that might be why they adopted it. Sometimes the appearance of security is more important than security itself.”

Questions 1-5

Do the following statements agree with the information given in the passage? Please write

TRUE if the statement agrees with the writer

FALSE if the statement does not agree with the writer

NOT GIVEN if there is no information about this in the passage

1.According to internet security experts, secondary security measures provide little additional protection against fraud.

2.In the Harvard and MIT study, two subjects didn’t log on without seeing the correct pictures.

3.According to Schechter, more than 90% of online banking customers studied logged on without seeing the right pictures.

4.The image system is the only security measure that the banks mentioned in the passage have currently.

5.Bank of America is the first bank that adopted the image system.

Questions 6-13

Answer the following questions or complete the following sentences by choosing NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

6.What is ING Direct and Vanguard?

7.What might online banking customers be cheated to give at a fraudulent Web site?

8.What may stop online banking customers from using new verification methods?

9.The key to online banking security is to verify the ______ of customers.

10.Where is PassMark Security located?

11.What is the reason why SiteKey is popular among online banking customers?

12.What was used instead of images in the Harvard and M.I.T. study?

13.How many security methods are mentioned in this passage?

1. 第一段“Now a study suggests that a popular secondary security measure provides little additional protection.”

第四段 “But the researchers had secretly withdrawn the images.”即研究人员撤下了图形,第五段“Only two chose not to log on, citing security concerns.”,有两个人因为安全考虑未进入。

3. T 见第6段。

4. F 见第11、14段。

5. F 见第11段“Bank of America was among the first to adopt it”,可见首批采用图形识别软件的银行并非Bank of America一家。

6. A financial institution

7. (their) passwords

8. less convenience

9. identity

10. Silicon Valley

13. 4 分别见第十段的“download new security software”和“hardware devices that feed them PIN codes”,第十五段的“a *all software program, called a cookie”,以及本文提到的site-authentication images。

Which THREE attractions can you visit at present by train from Trebirch?

A. A science museum

B. A theme park

C. A climbing wall

D. A mining museum

E. An aquarium

F. A castle

G. A zoo

Um, there’s the Merthyr Mining Museum,听到Mining Museum, 同时听到后面有which is only half an hour from Trebirch by train.

Your children will find it just as fascinating as any theme park. 题中使用了as…..as…..

Mainline trains also offer direct services to Bristol, where you can visit the docks or spend a great day out with the children in the zoo. 在这句话中,考生需要抓出trains, spend a day in the zoo,可确定zoo, G 为正确选项。

同样,后面一句which is set in the parkland that used to surround the old castle.

在后半部分,可以听到special family awayday fares,以及 where there’s lots to see and do including…..climbing wall built on the site of the old aquarium. 其中 fare 为火车费用,后面 to see and do 等同于attraction, 所以确定climbing wall,C 为正确选项。

在听力内容的后,提到了new science museum opens next year 与题干中at present 相悖,故排除。

In which TWO ways is Dan financing his course?

A. He is receiving money from the government.

B. His family are willing to help him.

C. The college is giving him a *all grant.

D. His local council is supporting him for a limited period.

E. A former employer is providing partial funding.

So then I asked the boss of the company I used to work for if they would sponsor me,………, he said they’d make a contribution.

My parents had been saying that as I ……., but in the end they took pity on me, so now I’ve just about got enough.

原文中 the boss of the company I used to work =former employer .

sponsor, make a contribution =finance

parents =family , take pity on me = agree to support me

同时,录音中还提到local council for grant, 但是终 turn me down.

I thought I was eligible for government funding, but it seems I was mistaken.其中eligible= qualified,

容易混淆的是college grants, 录音中提到,college grants and scholarships, 但Dan说but they are all so *all that I decided to leave them until I was desperate.

which TWO reasons does Jeannie give for deciding to leave some college clubs? 关键词为two reasons, leave the clubs.

A. She is not sufficiently challenged.

B. The activity interferes with her studies.

C. She does not have enough time.

D. The activity is too demanding physically.

E. She does not think she is any good at the activity.

Drama club : I’ve got behind with my work, but it’s worth it.

behind with my work=interfere with her studies, 但是提到worth it, 所以B排除。

Singing:I don’t think the conductor stretches us enough, though so I’ll give up after the next concert.

Debating society: It’s fun, but with all the rehearsing I’m doing, something has to go.

同时也提到了something has to go, 意味着要退出。

Sports: I’m not very good, but I’d really miss it if I stopped. I’m simply not fit enough.

What TWO disadvantages of the questionnaire form of data collection do the students discuss?

A. the data is sometimes invalid

B. Too few people may respond

C. It is less likely to reveal the unexpected

D. In can only be used with literate populations

E. There is a delay between the distribution and return of questionnaire

原文:

ROSA: No, I’m sure it talked drawbacks as well, didn’t it? Something about the response rate and the problems you get if it’s too low. (B)

MICK: Yeah, but we only need data from five subjects anyway.

ROSA: I suppose so. Another drawback I remember it mentioned was that questionnaire data tends not to reveal anything unexpected (C), because it is……

Which THREE of the following problems are mentioned in the connection with 20th century housing in the East End?

A. Unsympathetic landlords

B. Unclean water

C. Heating problems

D. High rents

E. Over crowing

F. Poor standards of building

G. Houses catching fire

Houses were crowded closely together and usually very badly built. (F)

Few houses had electricity at this time, so other sources of power were used, like coal for the fires which heated perhaps just one room. (C)

A tiny, damp, unhealthy house like this might well be occupied by two full families, possibly including several children, grandparents, aunts and uncles. (E)

Which TWO things are included in the price of the tour?

A. Fishing trip

B. Guided bushwalk

C. Reptile park entry

D. Table tennis

E. Tennis

You guide will take anyone who is interested either on a bushwalk through the national park near the hotel, and there’s no extra charge for that, or on a fishing trip. That’s an extra $12 I think. And there is also a reptile park in town-that costs more or less the same. And if you just want to relax, you are free to sit by the hotel pool or go down the beach. Oh, they also have tennis courts at the hotel, but you have to pay for those by the hour. But there are table tennis tables downstairs, and they are part of the accommodation package……

其实,如果所有选项都在听力中重现,还可以用排除法去剔除错误选项,剩下的就是正确选项了,也就是说就算不知道“part of the accommodation package”的意思选不出E来,也应该知道D. table tennis是需要pay by the hour的,也就是和“are included in the price of the tour”意思相反,A,C选项也可以用同样的方式剔除。

A. Unsympathetic landlords

B. Unclean water

C. Heating problems

D. High rents

E. Over crowing

F. Poor standards of building

G. Houses catching fire

Houses were crowded closely together and usually very badly built, because there was no regulation. But the poor and needy were attracted by the possibility of work, and they had to be housed. It was the availability, rather than the condition, of the housing that was the major concern for tenants and landlords alike. Few houses had electricity at this time, so other sources of power were used, like coal for the fires which heated perhaps just one room. Of course, the *oke from these contributed a great deal to the air pollution for which London used to be famous. A tiny, damp, unhealthy house like this might well be occupied by two full families, possibly including several children, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Which THREE topics do this term’s study skill workshop cover?

A. An introduction to the Internet对应的听力原文的内容“the one for internet beginners was last term”和题目要求的this term相反,除此之外的部分与A选项的意思完全一样,就是时间限制让A选项成了错误项、干扰项。

Which THREE topics do this term’s study skill workshop cover?

A. An introduction to the Internet

B. How to carry out research for a dissertation

C. Making good use of the whole range of library services

D. Planning a dissertation

E. Standard requirements when writing a dissertation

F. Using the Internet when doing research

G. What books and technical resources are available in the library

Section 1 A conversation between two people about a general topic with a transactional purpose (e.g. finding out information about travel).

Section 2 A monologue or prompted monologue on a general topic with a transactional purpose (e.g. giving information about events in the community).

Section 3 A conversation between two or three people in an academic context (e.g. a student and a tutor discussing an academic problem).

Section 4 A monologue in an academic context (e.g. a lecture).

Section 4:

例:how many circuses are there in the festival?

A. one

B. two

C. several

“For today’s report though, Geoffrey, I’m looking at some of the theatrical events that you might like to see; in particular, at this year’s theme-Circuses1.(此处原词第一次重现,学生需要再此处提高警惕,答案即将登场). I’m going to tell you about two Circus2 (原文中生词第二次出现) performances, but there are plenty of others in the programme”.

Where does Circus Romano perform?

A. in the theatre

B. in a tent

C. in a stadium

当原文中提到Where do you live?

剑桥雅思5, Test1, Section4(summary completion):

原题:

Research indicates that many women only think about their financial future when a 36-----------occurs. This is the worst time to make decisions…... A good way for women to develop their 38---------- in dealing with financial affairs would be to attend classes in 39------------.

The research indicates that at present for women it takes a crisis to make them think about their future financial situation.

c. 句型上的较大调整: women do sth when ___occurs

替换成了it takes ___ for women to do sth

题目: a good way is to develop __________ in dealing with financial affairs

Woman avoid dealing effectively with their economic situations because of a lack of confidence …

------- 女性不能有效handle经济事务是由于 a lack of confidence

时间,地点,名词,比较级,做高级,表程度的词(如a large part; a great number)和表示否定意义的词。

3. 观察题目布局:比如前后两道题中间隔了好几句话,那么,请期待录音出现于答案无关的大段废话吧, 对于这些废话, 无需听懂,只要时时刻刻跟到录音讲到哪里就可以了;

6,test 4, section4:

36. One threat to the lions in the sanctuary is ___________

Despite living in the sanctuary, which makes them safe from hunters. They still face a number of problems that threaten their survival. One of these if the ever-present danger of disease.

39. The lions sometimes__________, especially when water is short.

关键词:表时间的信息:when water is short

And they’ve even been known to attack humans, especially in times of drought.

听到狮子attack humans符合了我们刚刚要的do sth,应该积极地写下来,听到后面出现 especially in times of drought对应上了缺水这一关键信息点时,我们就知道答案就是attack humans.
