Some people say that economic growth is the only way to end world poverty and hunger. Others say that economic growth is causing damage to the environment , and should be stopped now.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

There are some people who claim that the development of the economy is the most effective method to bring global poverty and starvation to an end, while others argue that development of the economy ought to be ceased forthwith due to the environmental harm that occurs as a result. In this essay, both ideas will be *ysed before my perspective is given.

It is certainly true that developing the economy can be very likely to assist people in escaping from a deprived life where they do not have sufficient money to spend and lack enough food to eat. This is because if different industries are properly invested in, the provision of a number of job opportunities can be guaranteed. In other words, people can find it much easier to earn a living, not living under the poverty line and worrying about how to feed themselves. When the economy grows stronger, they can even lead a better-off life, being able to afford whatever products and food they want.

However, it is also reasonable that the economy should not be promoted due to the detriment impact exerted on the environment. Some industries require intensive logging, which may result in deforestation, soil erosion and even climatic change when there is no strict control. Similarly, some factories are irresponsible, exhausting large quantities of unprocessed gases to cause air pollution or discharging toxic waste water which may contaminate rivers. Obviously, with the activities associated with economic development continuing to be organised, human beings will suffer from the bitter fruits of increasingly serious environmental degradation.

In conclusion, both sides of the argument have merit. On balance, my firm opinion is that world poverty and starvation can be best dealt with when the economy is prioritised because people are able to make money. However, although the environment can be negatively influenced by economic progress, various solutions can be adopted to minimise the harmful effects if laws and regulations are implemented.
