A time when I distinctly recall using my imagination a lot is when I was in middle school and we were set a project about outer space by our teacher. We all had to work in teams of four or five other students, choose an aspect of space, anything related to space that we liked, and design a poster, and each participate in a presentation – you know, each person talks about a different part of the chosen topic before the class. We had a couple of weeks to plan this together. My group chose The Moon, and we broke the topic down into 4 parts. One of us talked about the science of the moon, you know, the physics and where the moon was located and how far away it was and what the composition of the planet is. The other talked about the history of man and the moon, satellites, moon landings, things like this. The other person showed pictures of the moon from different times in history, pictures by Russian astronauts, Chinese, and American moon-landing photos. And my part was to talk about myths and stories related to the moon throughout history. I decided to also accompany my talk with a big collage, a sort of poster that combined the different myth images into one big picture. I had to really use my imagination to choose which were the best myth images to draw and how to combine them. It’s quite hard to explain really, but it really required quite a bit of thought and imagination because I’m quite proud of my art abilities, and I’m good at drawing, so I wanted to kind of show off a little bit about my skills. So, I spent quite a long time creating one big design which focused on all the key myths about the moon that I had read about. I felt great about the end result and honestly I think I did a great job. I think my imaginative skills and my artistic skills come from my father, who always told me stories as a child in bed and encouraged me to play all number of imaginative games. I think we learn a lot from stories when we are children, and those usually inspire our imagination.
