Describe something important that your family has kept for a long time.

You should say:

What it is

What it is used for

How your family got it

And explain why it is important to your family

Something important that my family has kept for a really long time is a clock from my great great grandmother. It’s a wooden and gold clock that used to sit above the fireplace in her home. It’s an antique and it’s apparently worth a lot of money. It’s been passed down through the generations of my family, and my mother takes great care of it. She makes sure it is serviced every few years, kept perfectly clean and polished, and doesn’t let any of us touch it. She’s always been very protective over that clock and says she’d be very upset if it was broken or damaged. So, the clock has great sentimental value as well as monetary value. My mother has always been a sensitive and nostalgic person, so she has quite a few things that have been passed down through the family on her side, and she looks after them with great care. However, the clock is the one thing that she treasures more than anything else. I remember one time when I was a kid, I was playing with it and a screw came out of the base – my mum was furious. It was easy to fix, but still she was crazy – she’s really particular about things like this, and takes great care of all her possessions, especially these sentimental items.

1. What kinds of items would a family keep for a long time?

Families usually keep heirlooms for a very long time, passed down through the generations. Things like antiques, or photographs of the family, perhaps even books. Some people have books that they really cherish and take care of – novels – things like this. Others collect records, vinyl records from their grandparents. I can’t really think of anything else off-hand to be honest.

2. Are there any differences between the things that are important to a family now and in the past?

Yes, I believe so. I think today we tend to take things for granted more. We don’t cherish or treasure things like we used to many years ago because we live in more fortunate times, and have a lot of opportunities to buy new things, rather than take care of the things we have and repair them when they are broken. Young people are way more frivolous today than they were in the past, and often take things for granted, especially people who have money and are used to a very comfortable standard of living.

3. What kinds of things are kept in museums?

Museums house all sorts of things. From precious antiques, to relics from the past. Historical items mainly. Chinese museums usually house things like jade – a lot of statues, figures and jewelry made from jade, a green precious stone. But in general, anything that is old and of historical or cultural value, is stored in a museum and usually exhibited in a way that visitors can enjoy looking at these items and read about them.
