【1】

If anybody thinks…, they are seriously mistaken.

Example 1:

Q:Is it a good thing that everyone has their own car?

A: If anybody thinks having a private car across the entire population is a good thing, they are seriously mistaken.

Example 2:

Q: What factors do people need to consider when they buy furniture for their homes?

A: Quality definitely tops the list of our concern. If anybody thinks price is the only consideration in making the purchase, they are seriously mistaken.

【2】

I’d be lying if I said yes/no…

Example 1:

Q: Are you nervous? I see your hands shaking.

A: I’d be lying if I said no.

Example 2:

Q: Did you feel discouraged when you failed your exam?

A: I’d be lying if I said no.

【3】

If (否定句),I don’t know what/who is/does.

Example 1:

Q: Is advertising bad for your life?

A: Sadly, yes. …. If this does not qualify as a threat to our personal life, I don’t know what does.

Example 2:

Q: Do you think communicating with a foreigner is the best way to learn a country’s culture?

A: Absolutely. … If face-to-face communications and interactions with foreigners do not qualify as the most effective approach to acquiring their native culture, I don’t know what does.

【4】

You might be wondering…, but the truth is …

Example 1:

Q: Do you think children should learn music?

A: I don’t think so. You might be wondering how music is part of our life, I agree. But the truth is it’s something we naturally enjoy as opposed to an important skill that takes time and effort for children to learn.

Example 2:

Q: What would you do if you bought something bad from the Internet?

A: I’d stay silent, as if nothing happened. You might be wondering filing a complaint, but the truth is it doesn’t work that way for online shopping. …

【5】

It’s like…

Example 1:

Q: How well do you sing?

A: Well, I’d say awful. My singing is like a bobcat screaming for help while being dragged down the highway at 120 miles per hour.

Example 2:

Q: Is it necessary to protect our tradition?

A: Absolutely. Tradition to our country is like a mother to her baby. …

【6】

Without something, god knows what would happen.

Example 1:

Q: Do you think companies should have rules?

A: … Without corporate rules to keep employees’ behaviors in check, god knows what would happen.

Example 2:

Q: Should companies reward outstanding employees?

A: Apparently. … Without such reward and punishment system, god knows what would happen. Perhaps…
