Competitions in school
1. Q: Why do you think some school teachers use competitions as class activities?
A: I guess the teachers want to motivate their students. Everybody wants to be successful, and the competitions would stimulate the potentials of them.
2. Q: Do you think it is a good thing to give prizes to children who do well at school? Why?
A: I guess it is good. When children do well, and they get prizes, this will make them be better in the future. Oh, I think prizes should be given to those who make progress in their classes as well. This is better.
3. Q: Would you say that schools for young children have become more or less competitive since you were that age? Why?
A: Schools are more competitive than before. Everybody is making great efforts to be successful in their studies, and they know there will be a discrepancy between the winners and losers. Life is tough, and they have to face competition.

4. Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of intensive training for young sports people?
A: Young athletes are going to get a lot of professional advice from their coaches or trainers. Their body structure is going to be stronger and their achievement is going to be better. As for the drawbacks, I think the biggest disadvantage will be the possibility that some people may get injured in the process of intensive training.
5. Q: Some people think that competition leads to a better performance from sports stars. Others think it just makes players feel insecure. What is your opinion?
A: Competition is quite indispensable for the sports stars. Without the competition, they would be satisfied with their status quo. After they lose a match to another athlete, they would make great
6. Q: Do you think that it is possible to become too competitive in sport? In what way?
A: I don’t know about other countries, but in China, this is definitely the case. The athletes have to be competitive to do well in sports. We just train the elites for a certain sport. We want champions in sports instead of the commoners.

Competitions in school
1. Q: Why do you think some school teachers use competitions as class activities?
A: I think that some teachers use competitions in the classroom because they grab the interest of the students. Many people are naturally competitive, often without realizing it. Competition also makes things more interesting.
2. Q: Do you think it is a good thing to give prizes to children who do well at school? Why?
A: Yes, it is a good idea to give prizes to children who do well, but I think that hard work and effort should also be rewarded. Some children may try their best and work really hard, but they may not always come out on top. However, their efforts should be recognized so that they will keep trying to improve.
3. Q: Would you say that schools for young children have become more or less competitive since you were that age? Why?
A: In some ways schools have become less competitive than they used to be and I think standards have fallen. In Britain they have tried to have less competition in school and make all pupils do the same work. This has been disasterous. The bright children hate school because the work does not challenge them and they are bored. The less able children cannot do the work and feel humiliated and resentful. Only average children are catered for. You would not have a clothing store that had just one size of clothing for a certain age and try to make all sizes of children fit this garment. Why do this to children’s education?

4. Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of intensive training for young sports people?
A: I would guess that some advantages to intensive training at a young age are that the child becomes goal focused and learns early that they must work hard in life to achieve something. However, depending on how intensive the training is, I also imagine that it could be bad for a child’s development — both socially and physically. Perhaps they will spend all their time training instead of maintaining friendships and doing their schoolwork.
5. Q: Some people think that competition leads to a better performance from sports stars. Other think it just makes players feel insecure. What is your opinion?
A: Sports stars must surely be used to competition. After all,the word “star” suggests that they are professional, and they must know that competition is part of the job.
6. Q: Do you think that it is possible to become too competitive in sport? In what way?
A: Perhaps it is possible. It is important to have a healthy work-life balance in any job,and a sporting profession shouldn’t be any different. Maybe some sports players become too obsessed with their sport. Usually the career of a sports player is a short one, so if all their focus is on their sport and on the competition... what happens when it is no longer there?
