雅思口语高频话题:vehicle

近期出现新题——something you cannot live without(not computer or vehicle), 这道题其实完全可以和之前的一道题合并起来讲,就是“a vehicle you would like to buy”. 下面跟着的曾丽娟老师一起来看看具体怎么说:

a car or vehicle you would like to have in the future
You should say:
Which will you choose (motorbike or car)
What it will look like
How much it will cost
And explain why you’d like to buy it
Which will you choose (motorbike or car)

Well I don’t think that I am a very material person at all, but having a Porsche would be very neat, don’t you think? Chic (时尚的), elegant (优雅的), prestigious (久负盛名的), and luxurious (奢华的). And they drive oh-so well. They’re the best! Simple as that!
What it will look like

Porsche has powerful engines which ensure superb performance (卓越的性能), and *ooth, sleek lines, which makes it the slickest car on the road.  If I had enough money, I would like to buy a Porsche 911 GT2 which is a sports car with twin-turbocharged engine (双涡轮增压引擎), Ok, I guess I have to admit that maybe I want the car as a trophy to show off (炫耀)a little bit and satisfy my vanity (满足我的虚荣心).
How much it will cost

But for sure it will cost a pretty penny. Since Porsche is not a poor man’s car.  People who drive them are either upper crust (上流社会)or really loaded (富有). I don’t have enough money to buy one in near future. So I keep this on my goal list now.
Why you’d like to buy it
You know, I have been in love with Porsche cars since I was little. So, when I finally got to test drive one, I was even more amazed. It was a heart-stopping experience: driving with the pedal to the metal (全速前进), feeling in control, feeling like I had accomplished something just by driving a work of art!
Since then I drove it everyday in my mind, I even joked to my friends that I refuse to die without having owned my very own Porsche.
I believe I will have one someday, it’s gonna happen!

What are the advantages to society of having more people using mass transportation?
There are many advantages to using public transportation.
First is cost. If you compare the cost of gas, parking and auto maintenance to the cost of a bus or train pass, you'll find that a monthly commuting pass is far more economical. Convenience is the next advantage: Most trains and buses run on a set schedule that you can set your commuting time around. No more roaming around looking for parking or sitting in traffic. The last thing is environment. Everyone who is taking his or her own vehicle is causing some individual pollution, and the earth does not need any extra of that. And many public transportations systems like trains or cable cars do not cause the same energy waste.
Do you think that governments should control the number of private cars that are on the roads? How could this be done?

Absolutely! The reason for congestion in many major cities is attributable to the increasing number of private cars and incomplete urban public transportation systems. And some measures should be taken to cope with traffic blocks. It is suggested that the purchase and use of private cars should be discouraged. People also suggest that "congestion fees" should be levied on cars driving into the downtown areas of a city during rush hours; and more parking fees in downtown areas should be handed out. Governments will have to control the number of private cars, while spending more on public transportation infrastructure, developing and upgrading the transportation network and encouraging city residents to choose public transportation. Once this has been done, only then will we not encounter traffic jams while going to work or just traveling around.

Do people in China consider cars to be status symbols?

It depends on your outlook. Of course, many people buy expensive cars (even if they can't afford it) just to show-off or project an image or wealth or importance. Those people would probably welcome the comments my friend received. However, some people feel comfortable with themselves and don’t have to prove anything to anyone but himself/herself. Some think it's a bad idea of putting a lot of money into that type of investment that can depreciate rapidly (mileage, condition...etc). Others use it as a tax write off. Just because you drive a nice car doesn't mean you are rich. It could be different priorities. You know, like someone need to be showy, bold, or flashy; while others opt for safe, reliable, affordable and fuel efficient.
