Due to the fact that towns and cities are places which display the splendor of a country, some people thereby argue that governments should expend money on supporting the construction of art works in public areas. Personally speaking, I am in favor of this viewpoint.

First of all, public art has become an integral part of urban culture which demonstrates a nation’s cultural features to people from other parts of the world. It would thus facilitate cultural exchanges among different nations as an effective supplement of formal international communication. Besides, this tangible cultural richness and diversity establishes a country as a cultural giant, as a result of which the national image would be promoted.

Another important reason of constructing works of art in public places is that they can serve as a form of recreation for people living in the city. For example, by appreciating art works like paintings and statues in a park, people can get relaxed and entertained after a whole day’s tiredness. This aesthetic enjoyment can enormously relieve their pressure from work or study and more or less raise their work or study efficiency.

Admittedly, investing money on building works of art will impose a financial burden on governments which may lack money to spend on urgent projects such as medical care. After all, with more fund provided, medical insurance could be expanded and medical service could be improved. Consequently, the physical health of citizens would be ensured and people's life expectancy would also be extended.

To conclude, despite the necessity of devoting money to urgent projects related to people’s welfare, I am still convinced that money should be invested in the establishment of art works in cities because not only do they symbolize the cultural identity of a country but their recreational value can enhance the quality of life for people.
