Work in developing countries

You should spend about 40 minutes onthis task.

In the course of urban development, weoften find ourselves confronted with old building problems. Some people thinkwe should pull down the old houses and buildings in the way; however, othersargue that it is a very rash decision to tear them down without fullconsideration.

What is your opinion about this issue?Give your reasons and examples.

Society: Sample

Introduction

In many large cities around the world, oldbuildings and houses often present us with a kind of dilemma: they sometimeshinder our efforts of urbanization while some of these old buildings haveacquired a certain value beyond the construction. In my opinion, a closerinspection of the problem is needed before we can decide whether to demolish orto preserve them.

Main Body 1

On one hand, most old buildings tend tooccupy too much precious space in the urban center, where high rises and towerblocks can be built to accommodate significantly more tenants. Also, especiallyin a lot of developing countries, old houses in the city center are shanties, posing a potential danger for the residents as well as passers-by. It is oftenreported that some dilapidated houses suddenly collapsed due to poor managementand unstable structures, killing the residents inside and injuring a fewpedestrians who happened to be in the vicinity. Moreover, the sanitaryconditions in these shanty houses have raised a growing concern among manypeople. Actually, they lack basic facilities of modern living, and it is not anexaggeration to say that these decrepit houses are an ugly stain on the citylandscape.

Main Body 2

On the other hand, in almost every big citythere are a few old buildings that date back to centuries ago or even theancient times. Many of them were elegantly constructed and beautifullydecorated. Visitors not only admire their superb architectural styles, but alsorecall the memories of their forefathers because of the buildings’ specialassociations with the past. Therefore, they have possessed a unique historicalvalue and form part of the city’s cultural heritage. In fact, these exquisite oldbuildings can be renovated and refurnished and used as ideal sites ofsightseeing, where tourists are bound to be captivated and linger around theseplaces because of the perfect combination of the inner cultural value and theexcellent natural environment, such as beautiful gardens and bamboo woods, which often surround these buildings.

Conclusion

In conclusion, old buildings and houseshave their own advantages and disadvantages, which we should take intoconsideration in the process of urban development. Of course, shanty house*ust be torn down without any hesitation, but every effort should be made topreserve old buildings with historical values because they are heirlooms thatcan be passed down to future generations.

English and native languages

You should spend about 40 minutes onthis task.

The spread of the English language andthe development of international touri* have a mainly negative effect on thenative languages and cultures in many countries.

To what extent do you agree or disagreewith this opinion? Give reasons for your argument.

Write at least 250 words.

Environment: Sample

Introduction

The English language is undoubtedly themost preferred international language in the world. It dominates almost everyfield of human communication and interaction, including business, politics, science, arts, and even education. However, we should not ignore its negativeinfluence on many native languages and cultures, which are struggling for theirsurvival.

Main Body 1

It must be admitted that the spread ofEnglish does facilitate the economic development in many countries of the ThirdWorld. By communicating in English, they can do import and export businesseswith industrialized nations, the majority of which adopt English as one oftheir official languages. Also, technologically underdeveloped countries thatunderstand and use English can master a lot of sophisticated technologies bystudying various kinds of scientific literature where English takes a paramountposition.

Main Body 2

Nevertheless, the victory of English allover the globe has resulted in a twilight existence of countless nativelanguages, which are vanishing at an astonishing rate. Countries whose mothertongue is not English are often eager to embrace the growing trend ofglobalization and are considering replacing their native language with Englishas the only official language. What is even worse, many native cultures areprone to suffer the same fate. Because language is the foundation andembodiment of any culture, the extinction of native languages leads unavoidablyto the demise of their corresponding cultures as well as many customs andtraditions.

Conclusion

In summary, although the dominance of theEnglish language has produced many benefits for the world, its inimicalinfluence on the native languages and cultures should also be taken intoconsideration because we cannot afford to sacrifice them for the prosperity ofa single language.
