According to Wikipedia, History is the study of the past, particularly how it relates to humans.
The history plays a vital role in the development of society. It gives us an insight into who we are and where we come from; it helps us stretch our perspective across time and space to think about what happened in the past and what we can learn from the past; it provides us with a chance to understand the world.
1. Do you like to learn about history?
这是一道喜欢或者不喜欢类的题目,首先我们来学习一下表达‘喜欢’的语言,题目中的like可以替换成be interested in; be into; be fond of; 或者用I find something interesting.不喜欢除了用dislike以外,还可以替换成hate; loathe; be fed up with; be sick of.
注意,答案尽量以Yes, I do. Yes, very much so; Yes, definitely; Yes, absolutely等表达。 No, it’s not my kind of thing来代替。
The historical events are very interesting(历史事件非常有趣);It can make us wise(使人明智)等。
这里推荐给考生一个加分的表达:to have a love-hate relationship with something,意思是说对某物或是某件事情既爱又恨。 (I’m more interested in historical stories rather than in details of names, dates and places.)
范例1: Yes, very much so. I’d say history is my real love. You know, it’s easy for me to get lost while reading historical books or watching some documentaries. I find history very interesting, mainly because it helps me stretch my perspective across time and space to think about what happened in the past and how our ancestors experienced things.
范例2: Well, to be honest, I have a love-hate relationship with history, generally because I’m much into the stories and the insights it gives me into the past, but I’m really struggling in the history exams which are usually centered around dates, names and places.
2. Do you think history is important?
It allows people to understand how culture, politics, economy, society and values developed.
History not only deals with the past but also with how the past led to the present.
It tells us what happened in the past, so that we avoid repeating mistakes.
Yes, I think so. History not only deals with the past, but also with how the past led to the present. So it allows people to understand how culture, politics, society and values developed. More importantly, since it tells us what happened in the past, we could avoid repeating mistakes.
3. Do you think you can learn history from films or TV programs?
(There are many ways to learn about history, such as watching films, reading books, watching documentaries, visiting historical sites, and attending history classes. )。至于哪一种才是了解历史最好的方式(the best way to learn history),每个人心中的答案各不相同。
目前,我们的电影类型有很多,比如comedy(喜剧),action movies(动作片),science fiction films(科幻片),martial arts films(功夫片),romance films(爱情片),war movies(战争片)等等,至于电视节目,种类更是繁多,常见的有reality shows(真人秀),talent search(选人才节目),talk shows(谈话类节目),variety shows(文艺晚会),sitcoms(情景喜剧)等等。
(Some historical events might be rewritten by editors to satisfy the plot),每部电影或者电视节目会站在各自不同的角度看待历史,我们容易受电影或节目中人物和剧情的影响(They may show the history from different perspectives, so that we are easy to be influenced by the characters and plots.),因此我们并不总是能够从电影和电视节目中了解到历史,然而记录片除外,因为其涉及的内容主要是历史或科学(Documentaries mainly deal with history or science)。
It depends. It depends on what the movie or program is. I mean, we usually watch some movies and TV programs in which some historical events are rewritten to satisfy the plots. In this case, I don’t think we can learn the real history. However, we may learn some from documentaries, which are particularly deal with historical issues or science.
4. Do you think the Internet is a good place to learn about history?
(Yes, I think so; Yes I guess so; Yes sort of),然后在给出理由,可以是网络资源充分,且免费,查阅方便等等(give a convenient access to information on almost everything)。
(No, I don’t think so; No, I don’t think it’s necessarily the case.),然后给出原因,可能是因为网络信息并不总是可靠或者客观(not always reliable or objective),也可能是因为网络当中充斥着大量的误导或虚假或歪曲的信息(be awash with some misleading or false or distorted information),还有可能是因为网络上信息量过于庞大导致很难找到真正有用可靠的信息(With so much information in the website, people may find it difficult to search for the useful and reliable information which they really need)。因此我们应当慎重使用网络信息(be careful in using the information on the internet)
范例1:Yes, I guess so. It’s mainly because the Internet gives us a convenient access to information on almost everything we need. So I usually go to some news and education websites to read some information about history or other things.
范例2: Well, I don’t think it’s necessarily the case, mainly because the stuff on the Internet is not always reliable or objective. You know, everyone can publish their own ideas on the websites so the Internet might be awash with a huge amount of misleading, false or distorted things. In addition, with so much information in the website, people may find it difficult to search for the useful and reliable information which they really need. So yeah, that’s basically why I suppose not.

Part One

Being Busy
When was the last time you were busy?
Last time I was busy was about one year ago when I was preparing for my high school entrance exam/college entrance exam, I got a lot of pressure from my family and teachers, also I really want to get good grades so I can go to a good school, I was pretty busy during that period of time.
Do you like having a busy life?
I’m not sure of that, I want to work hard and I think I’m ambitious, but I want to enjoy life too, I don’t want to be a workaholic, good amount of work and being able to enjoy life are what I want.
How do you handle stress?
First thing I usually try is coming up with a sensible plan, when things are under control then I won’t feel stressed out anymore, also watching movies and listening to my favorite music can help me relax effectively.
Do you think you will be busy in the next few years?
I think so, I’m going to study in Australia/England/搜闷吵the States/Canada soon, first I need to study hard to keep improving my English so I won’t have too many problems living and studying there, second I’世侍m going to experience totally different academic system and culture, there are just so much for me to do, I’m sure I’ll be busy.
Sunshine
Do you like going outside on sunny days?
Definitely, I love going out on sunny days, whatever I do is enjoyable, I can take a walk with my dog, enjoy a picnic in the park, or play tennis with my friends, I love sunshine.

Is the sunshine very important to people?
Definitely very important, I can’t imagine this world without sunshine, Sunshine can cheer people up, help people look on the bright side of things, stay positive towards life, also getting some sunshine is good for us, make us look energetic and healthy.

Patience
Is it important to be patient?
Yes, I think there are so many things that require patience in our society, no matter we are talking about work or personal life, we all like patient people coz thy make us relaxed and comfortable.
How to develop people’s patience?
One way that usually works for me is I put myself in the other person’s shoes, think about his or her difficulties or problems, it usually helps me be more patient.
Have ever you lost your patience before?
I did lose my patience once, even I always think I’m a very patient person, last year my dad and I were waiting for my grandpa at the airport, his plane got delayed due to weather problems, we were waiting at the airport for four hours, in the end we decided to give up and go home.
Yes, many times, unfortunately I’m not a detail-oriented person, when things are too repetitive or too easy, it’s kind of challenging for me to be patient.

News
What are the different ways people get news?
People get news from different channels these days, newspaper, magazines, radio, or internet, generally speaking, older people prefer reading newspaper or watching TV, younger people like reading online.
What types of news do you like?
I’m more interested in science and politics.
I’m more interested in sports and entertainment.
Are old people and young people interested in the same kinds of news?
I don’t think so, older people usually focus on something more practical, like politics and finance, I’m sure some young people are interested in these areas too, but generally speaking they are interested in something more fun, like sports or entertainment.
Which do you prefer reading magazines or newspapers?
I like reading magazines more coz it’s more interesting, magazines usually have more pictures, more interesting stories and articles, sometimes even reading advertisements can be enjoyable.
What are some methods that newspapers use to attract readers?
First I think they usually use interesting photos to attract people’s attention, also distinctive or funny headlines help a lot too.
Work
What’s your father’s occupation? /what does your father do for a living?
My father has his own company and he has been in furniture business for over 20 years.
My father has his own restaurant and he has been in this industry for over 20 years.
What’s your mother’s occupation? /what does your mother do for a living?
My mother is a primary school teacher, she teaches math.
My mother is a freelance photographer.
What’s your dream job?/What job are you interested in?
I always want to be a psychologist and help other people through counseling, so I’m going to choose psychology as my major in college.
Have you ever worked?/Did you have a part-time job before?
Unfortunately I never worked, we always have a lot of homework to do and usually our parents encourage us to concentrate on study

Names
What names are popular to give to babies in your country?
I don’t think we have popular names for babies to use like western counties, we do have some popular Chinese characters that parents prefer, like tian, means sky, yu means universe.
How do people in your country usually choose names for their babies?
I think a lot of families ask the elders’ opinion, like grandparents of the family, and some parents look for right Chinese characters in dictionaries, also there are some superstitious people find fortunetellers to choose names for their babies, they think right names can bring good luck to their babies.
Do any other people in your family have the same name as you?
Not really, Chinese people usually don’t share names with other family members, This is quite different from western culture.

Mobile Phones
Is your cell phone important to you in your daily life?
Very important and I use it all the time, I feel kind of restless if I don’t have my cell phone with me, I use it to call or text my friends and family, listen to my favorite music, play games, searching for useful information online, I can hardly manage without my cell phone with me.

How did you get your first mobile phone?
My parents bought my first cell phone when I was about to leave for my boarding school, that was about two years ago, they wanted to keep in touch with me so I could call or text them when I needed help.
Is there anything you dislike about using cell phones?
There are two things I don’t like about using cell phones, one is the noise, some people have really loud ringtones, or they just talk too loudly over the phone, it can be annoying. The other thing is I get random messages from strangers sometimes, they always want to sell me something that I don’t need, or tell me I won some lottery, I find this quite disturbing.
Do you usually use your mobile phone to call people or to send text messages?
Most of time I like calling people, I feel it’s much more convenient than sending messages, which can take too much time. But I don’t usually call people early in the morning, late at night, or on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I feel sending text messages will be more appropriate and polite.
Accommodation
Do you live in a house or a flat, how long have you lived there?
My family and I live in a house, we’ve been living in there for a long time, my mom said we moved in about 10 years ago.
What are the benefits(or advantages)of living in a flat/house?
People who live in a house can have more space of themselves, like a front or back yard, which is more spacious. Living in a *aller flat can save more energy and money, usually they use less gas or electricity to heat the apartment in winter or cool it down in summer.
What facilities does your location offer?
We have a lot of facilities in our neighborhood, there is a nice gym with an outdoor swimming pool near our place, a few banks with ATMs, a post office, a supermarket, also we have a 24-hour hospital.

Is the public transportation system good in the area where you live?
Compared to Shanghai it’s not that great, first we don’t have subway system coz it’s a *all town, bus system is ok and most of time is punctual, usually we don’t have much trouble finding taxis.

Hometown
What would you like to recommend to visitors in your hometown?
I think the best season to visit my hometown is spring or summer, I recommend visitors taking a walk in our bamboo forest, also trying the delicious bamboo shoots and seafood, those are our local specialties.
Has your hometown changed much in the past 10 years?
Definitely there are some changes, like the town is better managed, you can see more tall buildings and cars, my parents say the environment is not as good as 10 years ago, but generally speaking, it’s still a lovely *all town.

1.Are there many people living near you?
Yes, and they will say hello when they bump into each other anyway. But it can be annoying because gossip gets out everywhere here and everyone will know about it so it kinda sucks sometimes.

2.Do you know (all) your neighbours?
My neighbors are weird and get into lots of complicated situations that usually involve some one get hurt. Their family is complicated as their dad died and their mom is scatterbrained and remarried a guy who has kids of his own so now they have 5 or 6 kids. One of them is in college and only one of the remaining people are normal. So we don't talk to them much. They also throw big parties that keep me up all night.

3.How often do you see (or talk to) your neighbours?
I live in north east Scotland and i have good neighbours. we all chat over the wall and sometimes stand there for ages talking. Some we nip in and out of for coffee now and then. We are never in each other's faces all the time but we look out for one anothers houses if we're on holiday or such like.
Of course the *aller the town the better. In my town you can't go down the street without meeing a few people you know.

4.Do you think it's important to know your neighbours?
Yes. I would prefer to stay at a place where even if people know each other but still respect each other's privacy and do not gossip or snitch about each other.

5.How well do you know your neighbours?
I don't like my neighbours at all, they are very noisy, nosy, & rude people, i can hear them screaming at their kids & calling them bad names (although we live in a good neighbourhood), they run very loud music as well. If i run into any of my neighbours in the elevator, i don't open any talk, just "Hi" & that's it. Only the people in the 2nd floor are nice respectful people. I wish i had more good neighbours to be friend with.

6.Do you think it's important for a person to have a good relationship with their neighbours?
My neighbours are all grown up and are very kind. The benefits of having a good relationship with my neighbors is that we can make a new friend, share stories about our lives to improve them, to learn from them, etc. Not everyone can enjoy their neighbors, some people have strange, loud, neighbors. I would rather have older people as my neighbours because I like the peacefulness in a neighbour hood. I don't like all the ruckus.

7.What do you think of your neighbours?
My neighbours are great, we all get on very well and often socialise together, if one of us has a barbecue we invite one another around but we don't live in each other's pockets. This is a fantastic place to live, I got lucky when I moved in here.

8.What kind of people are your neighbours?
Nosey, Annoying, Has to know everything, sits on the porch and watches us do yardwork, has to know everyone's business. Well, just that kind of neighbor.

9.Do you spend much time socializing with your neighbours in your neighbours' homes?
Almost never. We have terrific neighbors and we want to keep it that way. We chat in the yard and gather outside. We help one another with the shoveling in the winter. We loan out our garden tools to one another. We even bring each other cookies at the holidays. But we don't visit in one another's homes often.

10.How (well) do you get along with your neighbours?
My neighbor spies on me, I wonder why. When I step outside I always see my neighbor behind the curtain watching me. I went last week to ask why and he denied it. I just laughed and walked away. He is over 65. I think he's bored but still bad behavior.

11.What are the benefits of having good relationships with one's neighbours?
You have to co-exist with them so why not be friendly. They can be a natural support to you and yours when and if needed, and vise versa. You have a community that shares life with you.

12.What sorts of problems (conflicts) can people have with their neighbours?
There are many: rave music full-blast till 6am, gangs fighting in the streets, throwing glass bottles at neighbours, throwing furniture through the windows...

13.In what ways can neighbours help each other?
By keeping an eye on each others properties for signs of trouble (break-ins).
Taking in the mail for a neighbor when they're away on vacation.
Helping with odd jobs around the yard.
Sharing things with each other (tools, garden equipment, household stuff...etc.).
Starting up a neighborhood watch program.

14.Have you ever asked a neighbour for help?
Never. I am too shy to go and ask my neighbors, because I don't like when people say no to me in front of my face.

15.Would you prefer to have young people as your neighbours, or old people?

Older people normally don't give too much trouble for neighbors because they don't listen to loud music, they don't throw big parties, they use to bring us a piece of cake when they bake it (it's really nice!) and when neighbors are younger or just have kids you're vulnerable to all sort of unexpected things, such as their music, parties, fights, but to compensate that they bring a lot of joy to the block. In fact, I think the problem is not really if the neighbors are younger or older, but if they are respectful and have consideration for the others living around. I have three neighbors, three young men who start party on Thursday and it goes until Sunday. The problem is not their party, but their bad taste for music and the fact that they have only one CD that they play a thousand times in a row. Nobody deserves it!
