I almost lost interest when you removed the fine arts and “specials” from the equation. That’s like saying, “What is your favorite color? Secondary colors, e.g., orange, green, and purple do not count as colors.”

As a computer/electrical engineering student, and 8-year band geek, I feel that I should be able to choose such subjets as electrical engineering or music theory. Instead of passing over this topic entirely, I will compose a response that ignores that last qualifier attached to the end of your question.

I really enjoy hands-on lab activities, and I particularly enjoy the problem-solving process that comes along with programming computer to do certain tasks. There’s also something really cool about soldering together components and wires for an electrical engineering lab, and making a circuit that does something really cool, such as control a hovercraft as it navigates a track.

Physics is my favorite “hard science,” because there’s a sort of beauty in using numbers and equations to accurately describe the way the world works. I personally feel like the real application of physics makes it more interesting than straight mathematics.

I really like music theory, and thinking about song structures. Harmony and melody structures are now so ingrained in my mind that popular music these days annoys the hell out of me, due to its sheer repetitive simplicity and three-chord forms.

I never enjoyed English, since I think very objectively, and most of English study is very subjective. It is my personal opinion that the field of literary critici* is 75% fluff, and it frustrates me that so many people write down their own interpretations of literature, yet present the ideas as fact. It’s a ridiculous idea that anyone should be able to do that, and as such, I have a very hard time doing it myself. I just spend too much time trying to find real facts in the literature, when apparently you’re just supposed to make up your own, and then contrive ways to back up the idea using the text.
