Well actually I’m not very good at math, and I’ve almost forgot most of the skills I’ve learned in math classes. But I do remember addition and subtraction.

It was in my first grade in primary school, our math teacher Ms. Su taught us how to do addition and subtraction among numbers below 10. The reason why I still remember it so well is that she adopted a very simple and interesting way so that we quickly got the hang of it. She showed us a couple of pictures on which there were some fruits of different kinds, and she’d pick two pics and, for example, she asked us how many apples or pears there were together in the two pictures. We counted them and added them. And we found that the total was always ten. So In this way, we learned how to do addition. Well, you know, subtraction is actually based on addition, so later on we could do things like 10 minus 8 equals 2. Thus, we learnt how to do subtraction very easily.

I just couldn’t help marveling at my brilliant teacher. I think these two skills are very practical and useful. And it turns out that they are two of the most common and useful skills in everyday life. Especially when we are shopping or calculating. We don’t have to take a calculator with us when we are not quite sure how much we should pay the shop owner at the street market. Besides, fast calculation always gives people a good impression. It makes us look charming and outstanding.
