Last week, I finished my intensive reading over The Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens for the 5th time. Yeah it was the 5th time that I go over this story. If you search the web or turn to book reviews, people would say a lot about how revolution changes formal suppressed peasants and how they impact the lives of aristocrats. But I would always like to treat it as an epic anthem of love and humanity.

As Dickens put in the opening sentence: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. The novel depicted several unique characters that demonstrate different aspects of humanity. I usually never read these kind of long fictions, but the words were so powerful, so I was almost lured into the book to investigate the story.

I personally like the story line of Carton, Darnay and Lucie. Darnay was the nephew of the evil Marquis St. Evremonde, but he resents his uncle's life and leaves Paris for London, where he met lady Lucie, daughter of Alexandre Manette. But the odd is that Dr. Manette was thrown into the Bastille since he messed up with the Marquis, a.k.a Darnay's uncle.

When Dr. Manette was mistakenly caged for the second time. Darnay goes back to Paris without hesitation. But the people in Paris recognized the descendant of Evremonde family and was going to execute him. So Carton, a brave and wise young man, sneaks into the Bastille, saves Darnay in order for him to escape with Lucie together.

The point is that Carton saves Darnay because he loves Lucie and is ready to do everything for her. This kind of love is something beyond my imagination. I hardly understand Carton the first time I read the book. But after I devoted my love to a certain people for, let me see.. 6 years, I kinda understood Carton's determination now.
