Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favor of them because of their benefits to humanity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that medicines and other products are routinely tested on animals before they are cleared for human use. While I tend towards the viewpoint that animal testing is morally wrong, I would have to support a limited amount of animal experimentation for the development of medicines.

On the one hand, there are clear ethical arguments against animal experimentation. To use a common example of this practice, laboratory mice may be given an illness so that the effectiveness of a new drug can be measured. Opponents of such research argue that humans have no right to subject animals to this kind of trauma, and that the lives of all creatures should be respected. They believe that the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused, and that scientists should use alternative methods of research.

On the other hand, reliable alternatives to animal experimentation may not always be available. Supporters of the use of animals in medical research believe that a certain amount of suffering on the part of mice or rats can be justified if human lives are saved. They argue that opponents of such research might feel differently if a member of their own families needed a medical treatment that had been developed through the use of animal experimentation. Personally, I agree with the banning of animal testing for non-medical products, but I feel that it may be a necessary evil where new drugs and medical procedures are concerned.

In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be wrong to ban testing on animals for vital medical research until equally effective alternatives have been developed.

Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, so protecting them is a waste of resources. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people argue that it is pointless to spend money on the protection of wild animals

because we humans have no need for them. I completely disagree with this point of view.

In my opinion, it is absurd to argue that wild animals have no place in the 21st century. I do not believe that planet Earth exists only for the benefit of humans, and there is nothing special

about this particular century that means that we suddenly have the right to allow or encourage the extinction of any species. Furthermore, there is no compelling reason why we should let animals die out. We do not need to exploit or destroy every last square metre of land in order to feed or accommodate the world’s population. There is plenty of room for us to exist side by side with wild animals, and this should be our aim.

I also disagree with the idea that protecting animals is a waste of resources. It is usually the protection of natural habitats that ensures the survival of wild animals, and most scientists agree that these habitats are also crucial for human survival. For example, rainforests produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and stabilise the Earth’s climate. If we destroyed these areas, the costs of managing the resulting changes to our planet would far outweigh the costs of conservation. By protecting wild animals and their habitats, we maintain the natural balance of all life on Earth.

In conclusion, we have no right to decide whether or not wild animals should exist, and I

believe that we should do everything we can to protect them.

范文

I found there was a bat nest in my balcony recently, and one night I happened to see they flew across the patio under our apartment and hover in the sky. I was shocked, because it was dark outside but they knew exactly where to go without mistakes. Moreover, they went out only at night.

I thought bats are interesting not because they can fly in the dark since I know they are nocturnal animals. I always think the ability which aids bats fly and prey capture is their unusual eye-sight, like another nocturnal animal, owls. But the truth is because of their echolocation. Bat echolocation is a perceptual system where ultrasonic sounds are emitted specifically to produce echoes. By comparing the outgoing pulse with the returning echoes the brain and auditory nervous system can produce detailed images of the bat's surroundings. This allows bats to detect, localize and even classify their prey in complete darkness.

a) An enjoyable experience you had in the countryside
=An interesting house or apartment you visited
=A garden you have visited
=A time you were close to a wild animal
=Something you did with a group of people
1- A time you prepared for a happy event
2- A time you missed an important appointment
b) A plan in your life (that is not related to work or study)
=A car/bicycle/motorcycle trip that you want to go
=A holiday you want to go in the future
a) This topic reminds me of my graduation trip three years ago. My roomies and I planned/made a bicycle trip to Hangzhou in order to celebrate the event that we succeeded insurviving from our high school.
We planned everything and discussed every detail together, like where would we live and how would we get there. The time I saw the apartment we booked, we screamed and laughed, rushing into it immediately. (That was one of the most interesting house I’ve ever stayed. Its exterior wall was painted as blue as the sky and inside was light blue. And the landlord made all the decorations himself, full of artistic atmosphere. What’s more,) there is also an amazing garden at the back of the house, and I was amazed at the sight of the beautiful scenery. Lotus bloomed quietly in the pond, and a slight breeze rose, wafting the heavy scent of flowers past us. But what surprised us mostly was that we met a wild animal in the garden by chance! Actually, that was just a little squirrel. One of us found it first and whispered in our ears, in case we were too loud to scary it. We got closer to the tree, helding our breath, and it looked like an elf! It was eating a kind of nut and jumped here and there. We took many pictures of it and signed that with the fast development, we no longer saw cute wild animals like it in our urban life.

2-We planned everything and discussed every detail together, like where do we live and how to get there. At last, we decided to set up in the middle of June which is not quite hot and we can get there by bicycle. But what happened before leaving was a shock to me: my granny passed away because of heart disease and I went back to attend her funeral ceremony. I was too sorrowful even to care about missing the appointment, but afterwards, I did feel pity that I missed the chance to finish that trip with my friends, and they’re now all in different cities. But they understood me a lot and made a interesting video on WeChat to comfort me and this made me feel so much better. Till now, I still feel so warm when I think of this, maybe that’s the power of friendship that can cure sorrow.

而在part 2中,有个地点类话题“Describe a place you went to that was full of color”,要求考生描述一个多彩的地方,是一个典型的色彩与地点结合的考题。

Question:

What is your favorite color?

Possible answer from students:

Well, as for my favorite color, I think it is blue. Because I like blue sky, and the color of blue always reminds of the blue ocean and sky. You know, I really enjoy walking in the long and soft beaches and feeling the sea breeze.

Describe a place you went to that was full of color

You should say:

Where it was

Why you went there

What you did there

And explain why you think this place was made so colorful.

Simple Answer:

If I have to say a few words on a place I went to that was full of color, what comes to my mind first is a place called Manama, the capital city of a middle-east country named the kingdom of Bahrain.

As far as I can recall, about 3 years ago, I joined a volunteer group and went there to do some volunteer job. Definitely, besides the job, I visited a lot of fantastic places and took thousands of pictures. A place, which impressed me most, is a fort. You know, forts can be commonly found in Arabic cities, but the forts in Manama are so unique. Because they are built in various colors, like dark yellow, white, light blue and even purple. That was so amazing that attracts millions of people from all over the word every year. One of my local friends told me that why should these fort been built in different colors is closely connected to local cultures. You know, different religions are mixed up in this mid east land.

I think I was deeply attracted by the amazing colorful forts there and even curious about its mysterious culture there.

My favourite colour is green and I have loved this colour from my early childhood. Green is the colour of nature, liveliness, fertility and freshness. The first reason I like this colour is that the nature bears this colour everywhere. There is nothing more beautiful than the vast green trees, green vista and fields. Green is the symbol of life and it represents the safety. The colour green also represents good luck, health, tranquility. This colour has long been a symbol for fertility and that's why once been used in the wedding gowns mostly in 15th century. This colour is often used in decorating to show the calmness.

If we judge the colour green from the colour psychology perspective, we learn that green balances the heart and emotions and thus create the equilibrium in heart and brain. From the meaning of colour perspective, green is the symbol of growth, colour of spring and symbolizes renewal and rebirth. It is the sanctuary away from the complexity and stresses of the modern lives and the tranquility of the calm, fresh and greener area.

I have my wall painted in green colour and it is generally believed that green is an eye friendly colour unlike red. The mild green colour is a popular colour which does not look too violent or too dull. I liked this colour even in my childhood and that I can be sure from the dominant green usages in my childhood paints. My teachers sometimes laughed at my weakness on green colour when I painted a green sun and green moon. I still remember I pained a green alien and that painting became very famous among our friends.

I am not quite sure how my fascination started growing on green colour but I guess I started liking this colour as I had spent my childhood in an area where green was the most dominating colour. This was the colour of nature and I was surrounded by the beauty of nature. I noticed in my childhood that green is the colour for living and yellow and red means dying, specifically for the trees and plants I had. May be this idea influenced my preference of colour. May be this choice is not directly related to any of my experience and reflected in a later stage as part of my individuality and personal preference. Whatever is the reason, I guess Green is a colour of profound importance and is my favourite colour.

What’s your favorite color?

White:

I love the color white because it’s so clean and pure. When I wear white, I feel very peaceful at heart. But I have to pay attention because it gets dirty so easily. I think a white Tee Shirt and blue jeans are the best combination.

Black:

I think black is very mysterious and sophisticated. For a girl, it looks very sexy. And when you wear black you look thinner, because the color is very slimming.

Blue:

It’s the color of the sea and the sky. It’s also the color of jeans.

So I guess in a sense, it’s a young and free color.

Red:

Red is the hottest and most enthusiastic color you can ever imagine.

And it’s the color of China.

Green:

The color green reminds me of the nature and the environment.

It’s the color of Spring when all lives come back around us.

So wearing this color, I feel very close to nature.

Do you like the same color now as you did when you were younger?

Same:

Well, yeah.

I’m a kind of person that likes something and doesn’t change.

And I think the colors of black and white are the most classic.

I’m a simple guy, so I like simple colors.

Changed:

I guess it changed. When I was young, I was childish, so I like bright colors, such as light yellow and shiny red. But now, I’m a 20 years old young man, I’m more mature, and so I like more understated colors, such as dark blue or deep green.

What can you learn about a person from the color they like?

I think you can tell about a person’s personality by his or her favorite colors.

For example, if a person loves the color red, he’s very out-going and not afraid to show his feelings and emotions. But if a person loves black, for instance, she maybe very reserved and mysterious. She may not want to share too much with others.

Do any colors have special meanings in your culture?

I think the colors of red and yellow represent our home country, China,

because they’re the main colors of the national flag.

The color red also means happy occasions, such as wedding.

I know that the color white means wedding in the west.

Yet, the it means death in China.

在谈到“Describe a hobby you have”这一话题时,一位考生是这样开场的:

Today I am going to talk about collecting postcards—a hobby that is both fascinating and financially rewarding. I would like to explain the basic kinds of collectible postcards, why they are so valuable, and how collectors buy and sell their cards.

It’s Saturday morning, and you are helping clean out your grandmother’s house. After working a while, you stumble upon a trunk, open it,and discover hundreds of old postcards.Thinking about getting to your driving lesson on time, you start tossing the cards into the trash can.Congratulations! You have just thrown away a year’s tuition.

在谈到“Describe a traffic jam you had experienced before”这一话题时,一位考生的开场白值得大家借鉴:

Traffic jams are more than a nuisance. They are a worldwide economic problem. In Guangzhou alone, they cost 12 million yuan each year.In major U.S.cities,they are responsible for more than 21 billion liters of wasted fuel and 68 billion dollars in lost productivity.Traffic jams will soon cost the British economy more than 20 billion pounds sterling a year.

As I speak today, there is a silent killer hiding near here.Who is this silent killer? Not a robber. Not a thief. Not a criminal. It is high blood pressure.

Question:

What changes took place in education in your country over the past decade?

Answer:

Well, everything is changing, so is education.

The most important change that took place over the past decade is this.

1. increased admission

It seems to me that more and more people are now able to go to college while in the past the competition was much stronger.

College admission is opening up, and this is a direct result of the state policy.

The consequence is that many students who have not reached the level of university education are also allowed to sit in the college classroom, therefore the quality of education has been declining.

2. master’s degree/overseas education

It is because this problem that an increasing number of people are pursuing more education after college graduation. These options include master’s program and possibly overseas education, just like what I’m doing right now. We’re fed up with the boring routine life in college, and we’re fighting for a better future for ourselves.

3. increased tuition

Unfortunately, not every child would have the opportunity to continue their education after college. Why? Simply because going to school is so costly.

The tuition has been almost tripled over the past decade and this presented serious financial pressure that some families cannot handle. So some of my clas*ates have to drop out just because their families ran short of money. Human tragedy! I’m lucky. My mom and dad are making enough money, so I can even go to college in Canada. But I’m not taking this for granted, I’ll be eternally grateful to them.

4. Private training institution

Wherever there’s need, there’s a solution. As more families realized the importance of making education investment in their kids, training demands has been soaring over the past 10 years. Private training institutions such as New Oriental flourished. So as long as you want you will always find a place to study and a class schedule that fits you. Opportunities for personal improvement are many.

范文

I want to learn how to drive recently. I bet it would be a hard time of learning how to drive since you have to prepare a bunch of things. First, you have to remember all the traffic rules and take a test before you touch the car. And then, taking driving lessons in a driving training school is a must. Only in this way can you take a final test and get a driving license. But the hardest part is when you drive in daily life because it is hard to get used to the real situation compared with practicing in the driving school.

People always equate driving with freedom and opportunities, and I agree. Knowing how to drive can bring people a lot of convince. For example, without a car you can't take a job that is not on a bus line. Without a car, you can't hang out with friends late at night, since there is no bus after 10:30 in Beijing. But when I succeed in driving I can ignore those issues.
